Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy treats visible small veins by injecting a solution that irritates the vessel lining, causing it to collapse and seal. The body then breaks down and absorbs the closed vein over several weeks. It remains the standard treatment for leg thread veins.

What it treats

Spider veins and thread veins on the legs, and some small reticular veins. It does not treat large varicose veins, which need vascular assessment first — if there is underlying venous incompetence, surface veins treated on their own will simply return.

How it is done

A very fine needle injects a small volume into each vein. Discomfort is minor, described as a brief sting. A session takes twenty to forty-five minutes depending on how many veins are treated. Compression stockings are worn afterwards, usually for one to two weeks.

Results and timing

Treated veins fade over four to eight weeks. Most areas need two to four sessions spaced a month apart. Temporary bruising and brown staining along the vein line are common and usually resolve within a few months.

Common questions

Will they come back?

A treated vein is gone. But the tendency that produced it remains, so new veins can appear over the years — many patients return for a short top-up session every few years.

Do I need a scan first?

If there are varicose veins, leg swelling, aching or skin changes, yes — an ultrasound assessment comes first. Treating surface veins over an untreated underlying problem gives a poor and short-lived result.
